Each and every one of us is born with a genetic blueprint. That blueprint tells our bodies how to respond to foreign invaders that cause sickness and disease. While some of us have "stronger" immunity than others, research now tells us that our lifestyle directly impacts our immune function. Meaning, you have the ability to boost your immune system through the foods you eat!!

Check out some expert insights on top superfoods that help boost the immune system.

Here are my top 3 organic superfoods that I use to boost my immune system.

1. Papaya

Rosemary Squires Did you ever think that someone would tell you this delicious fruit can boost your immunity? Papaya's rich orange color isn't just something pretty to look at, it is actually attributed to its beta carotene content. Beta carotene is a powerful antioxidant that shows up as the color orange. This color ranges, so when you see a red, orange, or yellow fruit or vegetable it has beta carotene in it! Think sweet potatoes, red bell peppers, carrots, mango, and papaya. Even some green vegetables have beta carotene, but this is masked by the darker green color of chlorophyll. I love to eat papaya fresh. But when I can't get it fresh, I'll add papaya leaf extract to my smoothie or oatmeal.

Try this  Organic Papaya Leaf Extract in your smoothie for an extra immune boost!

2. Moringa

Moringa is a tree with extremely nutritious leaves. These leaves contain fiber, iron, and calcium. They also contain a powerful compound called sulforaphane. This compound is also found in cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli and kale. I love adding powdered moringa and moringa extract to my morning smoothies.

3. Green Tea

The drinking of green tea dates back thousands of years! And it's no wonder this tea is still popular today. Green tea contains powerful substances called flavonoids. Flavonoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Basically, they are disease-fighting powerhouses! Moringa is a powdered green tea that has an even higher concentration of those disease-fighting compounds.

1. Garlic

One of the first things I do anytime I feel a cold or flu coming on is reach for raw garlic. Raw garlic is like nature's antibiotic and is fantastic at killing off pathogens in the body. Not only that but it is able to lower cholesterol and blood pressure and can help pull toxicity out of the lymphatic system. One of my favorite ways to enjoy raw garlic is to mash it into fresh guacamole or top my salads with it!

Try out Guava Leaf Extract that also supports healthy blood sugar levels and promotes healthy hair growth.

2. Chaga Mushroom

Medicinal mushrooms are having their time in the spotlight right now and rightfully so! Of all of those mushrooms, my favorite is Chaga mushroom aka the King of Mushrooms. Chaga gets its moniker for good reason - it is immune modulating, it revitalizes white blood cell count, strengthens red blood cells and bone marrow, and balances blood platelets. In addition to this, Chaga even increases melanin in the body, making it a great mushroom for skin health too!

Papaya Leaf Extract also proves to support healthy blood platelet and boost immunity.

3. Celery/ Celery Juice

Celery is much more than just a vegetable for dipping in ranch dressing. To start, its actually an herb that is part of the parsley family and second, when juiced on its own it imparts many immune-boosting benefits! Celery and celery juice are both anti-inflammatory because it starves and kills off pathogens in the body that can cause inflammation. It is also very alkalizing, it contains mineral salts that are supportive to the brain and nervous system, and it supports digestion and liver health. It’s not only great for the immune system but the whole entire body too!

Papaya seed glycerin extract supports healthy cleanse and removal of toxins from the liver, and intestines.

“Not only do antiviral herbs fight infections, boost the immune system & work as natural flu remedies, but they have a number of other health benefits too such as cardiovascular, digestive & anti-inflammatory support. It’s hard to choose just 3 among so many great options, but here’s what I came up with!

1. Elderberry:

One of my favorite immune-boosting plants for its powerful antiviral properties. Studies show that it may help shorten the duration of colds & improve symptoms of the flu. Elderberry is super-rich in antioxidants & anti-inflammatory compounds to help protect our cells from damage. It also contains an immunostimulant compound called anthocyanidins, which helps stimulate our body’s immune defense.

2. Garlic:

Another one of my favorites for ramping up immune health. Garlic is known for its ability to help balance the good & bad microbes in our bodies, which is essential for proper immune function. Recent research also shows garlic helps enhance the immune system by stimulating immune cells & regulating the secretion of cytokines, which are natural chemicals that help the immune system function. There are more than 6,000 studies documenting garlic’s antimicrobial, antiviral & antifungal properties to prevent & improve a wide spectrum of illnesses!

3. Mushrooms:

Last but not least, Reishi mushrooms, in particular, are well-known for their ability to stimulate immune function. Mushrooms contain a powerful compound called beta-glucans, which are “immunomodulators” that enhance our immune function. On top of their antiviral, antibacterial & antifungal properties, they also enhance the activity of white blood cells called natural killer cells that fight off infection. Other immune-boosting mushrooms include Chaga, Cordyceps, Turkey Tail, Lion’s Mane & Shiitake.
